About the game
Hadrian's Wall puts players in the role of a Roman General overseeing the construction of a milecastle and its bordering wall in 122 AD Britannia. Over six rounds, players build fortifications, staff their defenses, and attract civilians by providing entertainment and services, all through card-driven hand management and light paper-and-pencil bookkeeping. Whoever accumulates the most renown, piety, valor, and discipline, while avoiding disdain, proves themselves the model Roman citizen. It scales cleanly from a robust solo mode all the way up to six players.
Hobbli's Notes
Hadrian's Wall is a standout in the crowded card-driven euro space thanks to how well it scales: the low-downtime, mostly-simultaneous design means six-player games move almost as smoothly as solo ones. The historical Roman frontier theme layers nicely onto a tight hand-management puzzle, and the dedicated solo mode is genuinely well thought out. It's a great pick for groups of varying size who want a meaty but efficient euro experience.
What we like
- The design scales smoothly with very low downtime even at six players.
- Card drafting and hand management create a satisfying strategic puzzle.
- A strong standalone solo mode adds lasting value.
- Light paper-and-pencil scoring keeps setup and teardown quick.
Keep in mind
- The Roman building theme feels somewhat dry and abstract in play.
- Resource tracking on the pencil sheets can feel fiddly.
- Direct interaction between players is fairly limited.
- Tight timing windows can punish inefficient early planning.
Who it's for
Good for euro-gamers ages 12+ who enjoy card-driven city-building, playable solo or in large groups up to six.
