About the game
Oath casts one to six players as agents shaping the fate of an ancient land, whether preserving the old order or courting anarchy to bring it down. What makes Oath unique is its persistent Chronicle: the outcome of one session changes the resources, factions, and even victory conditions available in the next game, all without any app support. Players negotiate, battle for territory, and pursue asymmetric goals across a modular board. A robust solo mode lets a single player advance the Chronicle between group sessions.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli finds Oath to be one of the most genuinely innovative designs of recent years - watching your table's own history accumulate game after game is unlike anything else on the market. It demands real investment of time and rules learning, and works best with a consistent group willing to return to it again and again.
What we like
- Persistent Chronicle lets the game world evolve across plays.
- Deep political negotiation and asymmetric player roles.
- Robust solo mode for between-session play.
- No app or gimmicks required to reset or continue the campaign.
Keep in mind
- Heavy rules overhead and long playtime.
- Best enjoyed with a consistent play group over time.
- Notable downtime between player turns.
