About the game
Merchants Cove is a highly asymmetric worker-placement and rondel game for one to four players, each running a uniquely themed fantasy shop competing to serve adventurers at a bustling cove. Every merchant uses their own specialized components and mechanisms to produce goods, boost efficiency, and turn a profit over three days of trading. Players can hire staff, curry favor with faction halls, or dip into rogue connections for an edge. Whoever accumulates the most wealth by the end wins the day.
Hobbli's Notes
The asymmetry here goes deeper than most, since each merchant essentially plays a different mini-game bolted onto a shared economic core. That variety keeps repeat plays fresh, though it also means new players face a steeper learning curve depending on which shop they draw. It's a satisfying pick for groups who enjoy comparing very different paths to the same goal.
What we like
- Highly asymmetric merchant roles offer very different play experiences.
- Solo mode adds single-player value.
- Tile placement and rondel mechanics combine for satisfying engine-building.
- Faction and rogue options add strategic flexibility.
Keep in mind
- Asymmetric roles mean uneven rules overhead when learning new merchants.
- Some shop roles may be less balanced or engaging than others.
- Moderate playtime and complexity may not suit lighter game nights.
Who it's for
Good for Euro-game fans ages 14+ in groups of 1-4 who enjoy asymmetric worker-placement and economic engine-building.
