About the game

The Taverns of Tiefenthal has players expanding and running their own tavern in a medieval village, drafting dice to gain money, guests, and beer while building a personal deck of upgrade cards. With five modular expansion sets included, groups can add complexity gradually, layering in new mechanisms like a riverboat or workers as they grow more comfortable with the core dice-drafting and deck-building loop. It's a flexible, scalable game that grows alongside its players.

Hobbli's Notes

Tiefenthal earns its acclaim by handling deck-building elegantly through dice drafting, and the modular design is genuinely clever - your group can start light and add depth exactly at the pace it wants. Wolfgang Warsch (also behind Quacks of Quedlinburg) again shows a gift for turning simple mechanisms into deeply satisfying systems.

What we like

  • Modular design lets the group control complexity over time.
  • Clever fusion of dice-drafting and deck-building.
  • Award-nominated design from a well-regarded designer.
  • Strong replayability across expansion modules.

Keep in mind

  • Full modular setup can slow down teaching for new groups.
  • Deck-building payoff takes a few rounds to click.
  • Some modules add extra bookkeeping overhead.

Who it's for

Best for ages 12+, Euro-gamers who enjoy dice-drafting and deck-building, in groups of 2-4 looking for a game that scales in complexity.
