About the game
Newton casts players as young scientists during the Scientific Revolution, traveling across Europe to study, build tools, and advance their reputation among history's great minds. Over six rounds, players play cards from their hand to trigger actions, but must leave one card behind on the board each round, permanently strengthening that action while giving up future access to it. New cards with additional powers can be acquired to keep expanding your options. It's a dense action-selection engine builder themed around historical scientific discovery.
Hobbli's Notes
Newton's 'leave a card behind to power it up' mechanism is a clever twist on action selection that creates real long-term tension between flexibility and strength. It's a demanding, cerebral euro that rewards players who enjoy optimizing a growing personal engine over a full session.
What we like
- Deep, card-driven action system with meaningful long-term trade-offs.
- Satisfying tech-tree and card-acquisition progression.
- Strong solo mode for single-player engine-building.
- Beautiful historical science theme woven into the mechanics.
Keep in mind
- Long playtime with substantial rules overhead.
- Limited direct interaction between players.
- Can feel like solving a personal puzzle alongside other players rather than against them.
Who it's for
Best for experienced euro gamers 14+ who enjoy deep action-selection and engine-building, solo or in groups up to 4.
