About the game
Blue Lagoon is a two-phase area control and set collection game from Reiner Knizia set on the islands of a newly discovered archipelago. In the exploration phase, players expand freely by placing settler or village tokens adjacent to the lagoon or their own pieces, collecting scattered resources along the way. Once the board clears for the settlement phase, expansion is restricted to only the villages you established earlier, forcing careful early planning. Points are scored for sets of resources gathered across both phases, rewarding players who balance early-game flexibility against later-game focus.
Hobbli's Notes
Blue Lagoon is classic Knizia: deceptively simple rules that hide real strategic tension, especially in how your first-phase placements constrain your options later. It's a wonderful entry point into area-control abstracts.
What we like
- Elegant two-phase structure creates a meaningful strategic pivot mid-game.
- Simple rules hide genuinely deep spatial strategy.
- Quick setup and a snappy 45-minute playtime.
- Scales consistently well across 2 to 4 players.
Keep in mind
- Abstract theme offers little narrative engagement.
- Early positioning can heavily influence later options.
- Limited direct player conflict beyond competing for space.
Who it's for
Great for fans of Reiner Knizia's elegant abstract strategy games; best with 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up.
