About the game
Space Base puts players in command of a fleet of ships, rolling dice each turn to trigger income and abilities across everyone's tableau in a lively "I roll, everyone gets stuff" system. Players buy ships to build out their space station, creating engines that generate resources, trigger chain reactions, and launch surprise comebacks late in the game. It's fast to teach, fast to play, and full of swingy, exciting turns.
Hobbli's Notes
We appreciate how Space Base keeps every player engaged on every turn, since everyone's board can trigger no matter whose dice are rolling. The tableau-building is satisfying without demanding heavy strategic upfront planning, making it a great gateway to engine-building games. Its biggest charm is the comeback energy that keeps games from ever feeling truly decided.
What we like
- Every player benefits from every dice roll, keeping engagement high.
- Comeback mechanics make late-game swings exciting.
- Easy to teach in a few minutes.
- Compact box with high replayability.
Keep in mind
- Luck of the dice can outweigh strategy in some games.
- Some ship cards can create runaway leader situations.
- Limited direct player interaction.
Who it's for
Ideal for ages 14+ (though younger dice-game fans pick it up quickly), casual to mid-weight gamers, and groups of 2-5 looking for a quick, chaotic engine-builder.
