About the game
Downforce puts players in the driver's seat of high-stakes motor racing, combining auction bidding, card-driven movement, and secret betting. Players first bid to own the six race cars, then play cards to speed their own cars forward: though most cards also move opponents' cars, creating constant tension over timing. Along the way, everyone places secret bets on who they think will win, adding a bluffing layer atop the racing. Variable player powers add extra strategic texture to a design refined over multiple prior versions of Wolfgang Kramer's classic Top Race. Gorgeous art and a slick production make every race feel like an event.
Hobbli's Notes
Downforce is a masterclass in tight, elegant design: every card you play helps yourself and your rivals, which makes for constant nail-biting decisions. The secret betting layer means even players out of the running for first place stay engaged until the finish line. It's quick to teach, fast to play, and looks fantastic on the table.
What we like
- Elegant design where every card affects both you and opponents.
- Secret betting keeps players out of first place engaged.
- Gorgeous art and components elevate the racing theme.
- Scales well across its full 2-6 player range.
Keep in mind
- Auction phase can run long with larger groups.
- Card-driven movement adds a heavy luck-of-the-draw element.
- Limited strategic depth for players wanting a heavier game.
Who it's for
Great for ages 10 and up, families and groups of 2-6 who enjoy racing, bidding, and light bluffing.
