About the game
Blood Bowl turns American football into brutal fantasy combat, pitting two teams of miniatures, Humans, Orcs, and many more in later expansions, against each other on a gridiron. Players move their squad, attempt to pick up and pass the ball, and resolve violent blocks using custom dice that can knock opponents senseless. It's as much about maiming the other team as it is about scoring touchdowns. This 2016 edition streamlines the long-running Living Rulebook into a tight, tournament-tested ruleset. Assembly of the plastic miniatures is required before play.
Hobbli's Notes
Blood Bowl is a cult classic that rewards both tactical planning and a sense of humor about dice going catastrophically wrong. Hobbli's team appreciates how the game leans into its own chaos: a beautifully executed touchdown can be undone by one unlucky block roll, and that's half the fun. It's a big investment in miniatures assembly and rules learning, but the competitive scene it has spawned speaks to its staying power.
What we like
- Deep tactical positioning rewards careful team-building.
- Custom block dice create memorable, often hilarious swings of fortune.
- Long-running tournament scene offers strong replay incentive.
- Wide variety of teams provide distinct playstyles.
Keep in mind
- Requires assembling and painting plastic miniatures before play.
- Strictly two-player, limiting group flexibility.
- High dice variance can frustrate players who prefer pure strategy.
Who it's for
Ideal for two players aged 12+ who enjoy miniatures games, dark humor, and a mix of tactical planning with dice-driven chaos.
