About the game

The Quest for El Dorado is a deck-building race game where players lead expeditions through the jungles of South America in search of the legendary golden city. Each player builds a personalized deck of cards used either to move through the terrain or hire new helpers like scouts and scientists. Whoever first reaches El Dorado triggers the final round, and the player with the most blockades collected serves as a tiebreaker. It's a fast, family-friendly blend of deck-building and racing.

Hobbli's Notes

The Quest for El Dorado is a fantastic gateway deck-builder, thanks to Knizia's knack for distilling complex mechanisms into something simple enough for the whole family. The modular board and varied card pool keep repeated races feeling fresh. It's light on conflict but big on the satisfaction of optimizing your deck turn after turn.

What we like

  • Simple deck-building mechanics are easy to teach to families.
  • Modular board keeps every race feeling fresh.
  • Fast playtime suits casual game nights.
  • Low conflict makes it friendly for mixed-age groups.

Keep in mind

  • Limited direct player interaction beyond blocking paths.
  • Can feel repetitive to hardcore strategy gamers over many plays.
  • Deck-building depth is lighter than dedicated deck-builders.

Who it's for

Great for families and casual gamers aged 8+ looking for a light deck-building race, in groups of 2-4.
