About the game
The Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game reimagines Stefan Feld's celebrated strategy classic as a fast-playing roll-and-write. Using five dice, a timer, two number dice, and two color dice, players simultaneously fill in hex regions on their personal player boards, choosing which color and number combination best advances their territory. Completing color regions scores points and grants rewards like workers, silver, or goods, while a shared timer die paces the game through three phases. It captures much of the tactical puzzle of the original in a much shorter, simultaneous-play package for up to five players.
Hobbli's Notes
This dice-game adaptation is a triumph of distillation: it keeps the satisfying puzzle of fitting hex regions together from the original Castles of Burgundy while trimming the playtime to about 30 minutes. Simultaneous play for all players means virtually no downtime, a big plus over the original board game. It won't replace the depth of the full board game for series fans, but as a quick, portable spinoff it's superb. A great pickup for fans of roll-and-write games generally.
What we like
- Captures much of the original's tactical puzzle in a fraction of the time.
- Simultaneous play for all player counts eliminates downtime.
- Compact and portable, great for travel.
- Supports solo play alongside up to five players.
Keep in mind
- Lacks the depth and long-term strategy of the full board game.
- Roll-and-write format may feel repetitive after many plays.
- Requires dry-erase boards/markers or paper reprints for continued play.
Who it's for
