About the game
Wonderland's War sends players to the Mad Hatter's tea party as faction leaders drafting cards to gather forces before an all-out war for control of Wonderland. Between drinking tea and drafting resources, players build towers, upgrade leaders, and recruit Wonderlandians, all while dodging madness chips that could unravel their army. When the party ends, gathered forces clash in familiar locations, though completing quests offers an alternative path to victory. Three rounds of drafting and battling determine who is crowned the new ruler of Wonderland.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a clever mashup of area-majority combat and push-your-luck card drafting dressed up in a delightfully twisted Alice in Wonderland theme. The dual paths to victory, through battle or through quests, keep multiple strategies viable each game. It's become a favorite among fans of Blood Rage and Kemet who want something a touch lighter and faster. The Wonderland theme and striking art help it stand out on a shelf full of similar area-control games.
What we like
- Push-your-luck drafting adds tension to every round.
- Dual victory paths through combat or quests add strategic flexibility.
- Distinctive Wonderland theme with strong art direction.
- Variable player powers keep factions feeling different.
Keep in mind
- Combat resolution can feel swingy for players unfamiliar with the risk system.
- Rules explanation takes real effort for first-time groups.
- Player elimination-style setbacks from madness chips can sting.
Who it's for
Good for gamers who enjoy area-majority combat and drafting, ages 13 and up, in groups of two to five.
