About the game

Zona: The Secret of Chernobyl is an adventure game for one to four players set in the hazardous exclusion zone around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, where scavengers race to collect two Secrets from underground facilities before reaching the sarcophagus and winning the game. Each round, players take two actions - moving, exploring, fighting - before resolving an Event card and a shared News card that shapes the unfolding story. Ten unique Scavengers each bring their own Special Skill, stat line, and starting equipment, and a looming time limit called the Final Emission keeps pressure on every decision. The game leans heavily into survival themes, with players managing fatigue, damage, and equipment repair throughout their journey through the Zone.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team appreciates the strong atmospheric pull here - the survival-horror pacing and asymmetric Scavenger characters give the game real thematic weight. The built-in time limit does a good job of keeping tension high and preventing the game from dragging despite its long runtime. It leans into stat checks and dice resolution more than pure strategy, so it's best for groups drawn to narrative survival-adventure experiences rather than tight tactical puzzles.

What we like

  • Strong atmospheric survival theme built around the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
  • Ten unique Scavengers each offer distinct skills and starting gear.
  • Built-in Final Emission time limit keeps tension high throughout.
  • Works well across a range of group sizes, including solo play.

Keep in mind

  • Three-hour playtime is a substantial commitment.
  • Heavy reliance on dice and stat checks introduces real luck.
  • Niche horror-survival theme may not suit all groups.
