About the game

Warsaw: City of Ruins tasks players with reconstructing Poland's capital across six historical epochs, from the 16th century through modern times. Each round, players simultaneously bid on city tiles, choosing to discard them for coins or pay their cost to build in their own district. Tiles can even be built over existing ones, creating a constant push-and-pull between expansion and efficient reuse of space. Income and victory points are earned from your growing district at the end of each epoch, with wars disrupting the third and fourth epochs. After six rounds, the player with the most points wins the race to rebuild the city.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team likes how Warsaw: City of Ruins turns simultaneous tile selection into a tense bidding-and-building puzzle: deciding whether to cash out a tile or build it into your tight district is rarely easy. The historical theme of rebuilding a war-torn city adds real emotional weight that's uncommon in city-building euros. It does carry noticeable downtime at higher player counts as everyone reveals and resolves choices. Fans of tight tile-placement puzzles with a meaningful theme should take note.

What we like

  • Simultaneous tile selection creates tense bidding decisions each round.
  • Building over existing tiles adds a clever spatial-efficiency puzzle.
  • Meaningful historical theme about rebuilding a war-torn city.
  • Six distinct epochs keep the game evolving from start to finish.

Keep in mind

  • Noticeable downtime, especially at four players.
  • Simultaneous reveal-and-resolve can slow the pace of play.
  • District size cap can feel restrictive for ambitious builders.
