About the game

Star Trek: Ascendancy puts players in command of the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, or the Romulan Star Empire as they explore, expand, and clash across a modular galaxy. Using more than 200 plastic miniatures and 30 star systems, players build starbases, send out starships, and grow their civilization through diplomacy or conquest. It's a 4X game at heart, with action points, dice-based combat, and variable player powers driving each unique faction's playstyle. The adaptive, ever-changing map means no two games unfold the same way. Licensed straight from fifty years of Star Trek lore, it's a strong pick for fans of the franchise who also love big-box space strategy games.

Hobbli's Notes

this is a genuinely satisfying 4X experience wrapped in gorgeous Star Trek production values, and the exploration phase in particular captures that sense-of-wonder feeling fans want. At three hours and a fairly steep learning curve, it's not a casual pickup, but tables that commit to it get a memorable, sprawling space opera. The asymmetric factions keep replays feeling distinct. Best suited to groups who already enjoy epic space 4X games and can dedicate a full evening.

What we like

  • Deep 4X exploration and expansion gameplay with real strategic variety.
  • Gorgeous, licensed Star Trek theme with over 200 miniatures.
  • Modular, ever-changing map keeps every game fresh.
  • Distinct asymmetric factions with their own strategic identity.

Keep in mind

  • Long three-hour playtime demands a committed group.
  • High complexity and steep rules overhead for newcomers.
  • Fixed at 3 players limits table flexibility.

Who it's for
