About the game

Jórvík transports players to Viking-age York, where they play jarls competing for prestige through trade, feasting, funding raids, and hiring craftsmen and soldiers. Using a clever worker-placement and bidding mechanism, players acquire cards from a shared display to build their trading empires and defend the city from invasions. Designed by Stefan Feld, Jórvík is a redesign of his acclaimed Die Speicherstadt and includes both a base game equivalent to that original and an advanced game incorporating its expansion content. The player who accumulates the most prestige points wins.

Hobbli's Notes

This is Feld at his most elegant: a tight, clever bidding-and-worker-placement engine that punches well above its short playtime. The advanced mode gives it real longevity for fans who want more depth once they've mastered the base rules. It's a fantastic pick for groups who like sharp economic decisions without a marathon runtime.

What we like

  • The bidding-and-worker-placement mechanism is elegant and full of meaningful tension.
  • Two modes (base and advanced) give the game real replay value.
  • Stefan Feld's design pedigree shows in the tight, well-balanced scoring paths.
  • The Viking trading theme is nicely woven into the card and bidding structure.

Keep in mind

  • The bidding mechanism can create some player elimination-like frustration if you're consistently outbid.
  • Its abstracted trading theme may feel thin for players wanting strong narrative immersion.
  • Analysis paralysis can slow down the bidding rounds in larger groups.

Who it's for

Euro-game fans aged 10+ who enjoy tight economic decision-making, playable in about 90 minutes with 2-5 players.
