About the game
Kingsburg is a dice-driven worker placement game where players act as lords developing frontier territories over five in-game years. Each production season, players place influence dice on the King's Council to gather resources and recruit soldiers, with a clever twist: the player with the lowest dice total gets to choose first, balancing out unlucky rolls. Every fourth turn brings a winter invasion that all players must individually withstand. The lord with the best-developed territory after twenty turns wins.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli likes how Kingsburg's 'worst roll picks first' mechanism keeps every dice result meaningful, softening the usual harshness of dice-driven games. The build-up across five years gives a satisfying sense of long-term progress.
What we like
- Clever 'worst roll goes first' balancing mechanism.
- Multiple viable strategies toward victory.
- Satisfying long-term build-up across five years of play.
- Thematic seasonal invasion adds tension to the cycle.
Keep in mind
- Dice-based resource generation can still feel restrictive at times.
- Moderate playtime with a fair amount of downtime.
- Medieval fantasy theme is fairly generic.
