About the game
Covert casts players as rival Cold War spymasters managing networks of agents across Europe. Each round, players roll a hand of dice and allocate them to actions like moving agents, acquiring agency cards, and completing high-risk missions. Dice must be placed numerically adjacent to already-placed dice on shared action spaces, letting rivals block or complicate your plans. Players balance current missions against the equipment needs of future ones, all while racing against opposing agencies. It's a tense blend of dice placement, set collection, and tight timing from designer Kane Klenko.
Hobbli's Notes
Covert takes Klenko's knack for tense dice-placement design and wraps it in a slick Cold War espionage theme. Hobbli's team likes how the adjacency-based dice placement forces players to watch their opponents' moves closely, creating real tactical tension over who gets first pick of key actions. It's a satisfying mid-weight strategy game for fans of clever dice mechanisms and spy themes.
What we like
- Clever adjacency-based dice placement creates real tactical tension.
- Cold War spy theme is richly integrated into the mission and equipment systems.
- Variable player powers give each agency a distinct playstyle.
- Balancing current missions against future needs adds satisfying long-term planning.
Keep in mind
- 90-minute playtime and moderate complexity require a committed group.
- Dice placement can be blocked by opponents, adding some frustration for planners.
- Espionage theme, while strong, is fairly narrative-light in actual play.
Who it's for
