About the game

Potion Explosion challenges students at a magic academy to brew the most valuable potions using ingredient marbles pulled from a Candy Crush-style dispenser. When you pull a marble and matching colors fall into the gap, they explode and you get to claim those too, chaining together lucky combinations. Collected marbles fill potion recipes on your personal board, and completing potions lets you drink them to unleash powerful bonus effects. Because it rewards both careful color-tracking and a bit of luck in how marbles tumble, it appeals to a wide range of player skill levels. With colorful components and a satisfying tactile mechanism, it's a standout among lighter drafting games.

Hobbli's Notes

Potion Explosion's marble dispenser is one of those mechanisms that gets a genuine 'oh, that's clever!' reaction the first time you see it in action. It's easy enough to teach to kids and casual players, but there's real strategic depth in watching color patterns and planning your recipe order. The dispenser mechanism does need decent components to work smoothly, so we'd recommend handling it gently. A great crowd-pleaser for mixed-experience groups.

What we like

  • Unique, tactile marble-dispenser mechanism.
  • Easy to teach to new and younger players.
  • Colorful components with strong table presence.
  • Quick playtime keeps energy high.

Keep in mind

  • Marble dispenser can occasionally jam or spill.
  • Luck of marble falls can outweigh strategic planning.
  • Limited depth for hardcore strategy gamers.
