About the game

Frostgrave is a fantasy skirmish wargame in which rival wizards and their warbands battle amid the frozen ruins of an ancient city in search of lost treasures. Each player controls a wizard from one of ten schools of magic, hiring henchmen like thugs, knights, and thieves, and can learn from a pool of 80 spells over time. Individual games are quick, playable in an hour or two, but the real draw is linking battles into an ongoing narrative campaign. Designed by Joseph McCullough, it supports 2-8 players and uses miniatures for tabletop combat.

Hobbli's Notes

We think Frostgrave nails the sweet spot between accessible skirmish rules and deep campaign-driven customization, letting your wizard grow and specialize game after game. The wide variety of spells and hireable soldier types keeps warband building endlessly interesting. It does require an investment in miniatures and terrain to really shine visually. A fantastic entry point for players moving from board games into tabletop miniature wargaming.

What we like

  • Rich campaign play with persistent wizard progression.
  • Huge spell and hireling variety for warband customization.
  • Quick individual games despite deep strategic options.
  • Strong miniatures support from Osprey Games and North Star.

Keep in mind

  • Requires purchasing and painting miniatures for the full experience.
  • Rules depth can be daunting for board-game-only players.
  • Balance between wizard schools can vary.

Who it's for

Great for ages 12+ miniature wargaming fans who enjoy fantasy skirmish combat and campaign play; best in pairs or small groups of 2-8.
