About the game
Captain Sonar is a real-time team game in which two crews of up to four players each pilot a submarine, racing to track down and destroy the enemy sub before being found themselves. Each player takes on a specialized role - Captain, First Mate, Radio Operator, or Engineer - and all teammates act simultaneously, communicating frantically to coordinate movement, repairs, and torpedo strikes. Multiple maps and both turn-based and real-time modes give it huge variety and replayability.
Hobbli's Notes
Captain Sonar is an adrenaline rush unlike almost anything else on the shelf - the simultaneous real-time play forces genuine teamwork and frantic communication that few games replicate. It's loud, chaotic, and enormously fun with a full table of eight engaged players, though it truly needs that full group to shine.
What we like
- Real-time simultaneous play creates unmatched tension and energy.
- Distinct roles keep every player engaged throughout.
- Multiple maps and modes add strong replayability.
- Excellent for team building and group bonding.
Keep in mind
- Needs a full table of 6-8 for the best experience.
- Loud, chaotic pace may overwhelm quieter groups.
- Setup and role explanation take real time upfront.
Who it's for
Best for ages 14+, groups of 6-8 who enjoy team-based, high-energy real-time games (playable down to 2 with variants).
