About the game
San Juan is a card-only reimagining of the classic Puerto Rico, where players build a colonial city by selecting roles that trigger production, building, and trading for everyone at the table. Cards do double duty as both buildings and currency, so every hand decision balances immediate needs against long-term development. Choosing a role each round grants the chooser a privilege bonus, encouraging players to read the table and anticipate what others need most. The game ends the moment any player completes twelve buildings, rewarding an efficient, focused strategy over sprawling expansion. This second edition adds the Hut building card while streamlining the classic experience into a tight 60-minute session.
Hobbli's Notes
San Juan distills everything great about Puerto Rico into a fast, portable card game without sacrificing much strategic depth. The role-selection privilege system is as elegant now as it was at release, and the multi-use cards create constant hand-management tension. A must-have for fans of classic euro-style engine building who want a shorter, lighter session.
What we like
- Streamlined card-only design captures Puerto Rico's depth in less time.
- Role-selection privilege system rewards reading the table.
- Multi-use cards create engaging hand-management decisions.
- Twelve-building end condition keeps games from dragging.
Keep in mind
- Card-based abstraction offers less thematic immersion than the original board game.
- Role selection can feel repetitive across many plays.
- Some strategic subtlety may be lost on players expecting Puerto Rico's full depth.
Who it's for
Great for ages 10 and up, groups of 2-4 who enjoy classic euro-style engine-building in a shorter format.
