About the game
A two-phase economic game where players draft development cards to build a personal deck, then use that deck in a tile-laying transit game to connect Small City's buildings with efficient tram networks. Over six rounds, players balance auction-based card acquisition with network-building to move citizens happily (and stress-free) across the map. Deck-building and route-building intertwine to reward long-term planning. A clever fusion of deck-builder and train game mechanics for experienced euro gamers.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team is impressed by how Tramways blends deck-building with route-building - the two halves of each round feel genuinely interdependent rather than bolted together. The stress mechanic is a smart twist that punishes overreach. It's a satisfying, cerebral euro for players who like optimization puzzles. The two-part round structure and heavier complexity make it a poor fit for casual tables.
What we like
- Innovative fusion of deck-building and route-building.
- Six-round structure with meaningful long-term planning.
- Stress mechanic adds tension to network optimization.
- Rewards repeated plays with deeper strategy.
Keep in mind
- High complexity may overwhelm newer gamers.
- Two-hour playtime with heavy downtime for some player counts.
- Auction phase can feel fiddly to learn.
