About the game
Falling Sky pits up to four asymmetric factions against Caesar's legions in the final years of the Gallic Wars, using GMT's acclaimed COIN system of card-driven action and counter-insurgency. Players choose from Romans, Belgic tribes, Arverni, and Aedui, each with wildly different win conditions and toolkits, while events reshape the political and military landscape every round. A robust full-solitaire system lets one player challenge an array of game-run factions. It is a dense, historically grounded simulation of war, diplomacy, and shifting allegiances.
Hobbli's Notes
This is a COIN series entry at its most complex, and Hobbli's editors rate it as one of the most rewarding but demanding wargames in the catalog. The interplay of events and area control creates constant tension between short-term survival and long-term strategy. It genuinely needs a committed group willing to invest hours to see its brilliance emerge. Casual tables should look elsewhere, but dedicated wargamers will find it a career-defining play.
What we like
- Deep asymmetric factions each play in a genuinely different way.
- Card-driven events integrate tightly with the area-control map.
- A full solitaire system lets one player experience the whole conflict.
- Extremely high replayability from shifting political alliances.
Keep in mind
- Very long playtime that can stretch past six hours with new players.
- Steep rules overhead makes it inaccessible to casual groups.
- Significant downtime for factions not currently acting.
Who it's for
Best suited to experienced wargamers and history buffs comfortable with 3-4 hour sessions and asymmetric strategy; not recommended for casual or new gamers.
