About the game

El Gaucho casts players as cattle barons sending gauchos out onto the Pampa to wrangle the finest cattle. Using a distinctive 'dice rodeo' worker-placement system, players train gauchos to roll well, then spend dice to place workers who catch cattle, steal from rivals, or organize herds at home into valuable ascending or descending sets. Selling completed sets for pesos drives the scoring, while sneaky lasso tricks let you snatch valuable cattle out from under an opponent's nose. It's a thematic worker-placement game blending set collection with a dash of mean-spirited interaction.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's team enjoys El Gaucho's unusual dice-drafting worker placement: deciding which two dice to grab from the shared rodeo pool each round is a satisfying tactical puzzle. The cattle-stealing mechanic injects welcome player interaction into what could otherwise be a solitary set-collection game. It's a solid mid-weight euro that rewards planning without demanding excessive rules overhead. A good choice for groups who like their worker placement with a bit of theft on the side.

What we like

  • Unique dice-rodeo mechanism blends dice drafting with worker placement.
  • Satisfying set-collection scoring via ascending or descending cattle runs.
  • Direct player interaction through cattle stealing adds thematic bite.
  • Moderate 60-minute playtime for its strategic depth.
  • Solid decision space without excessive rules overhead.

Keep in mind

  • Early dice availability can create noticeable luck swings.
  • Cattle-stealing mechanic may frustrate players who dislike direct conflict.
  • Some downtime for players waiting on the dice rodeo.
  • Set-tracking on the table can feel a little fiddly.
