About the game

Super Motherload is a tile-laying deck-building game for two to four players based on the video game of the same name, sending drill pilots deep beneath the surface of Mars to mine rare minerals. Players draw from a personal deck that starts basic but grows more powerful as they purchase new cards, using them to bomb and drill tiles from a board that scrolls and changes like a video game level. Minerals collected fund better cards and achievement bonuses, both of which contribute to final victory points. It's a spatial, resource-driven deck-builder aimed at strategy gamers who also love video games.

Hobbli's Notes

Super Motherload succeeds at translating its video-game source material into a tactile, spatial deck-building puzzle rather than a simple reskin. The scrolling board mechanic is a clever way to simulate digging deeper into Mars. It's a solid mid-weight choice for groups who enjoy both deck-building and tile-placement puzzles.

What we like

  • Clever scrolling board recreates the feel of digging deeper underground.
  • Deck-building purchases create a satisfying sense of progression.
  • Achievement cards add extra scoring paths to pursue.
  • Distinctive video-game theme appeals to a crossover audience.

Keep in mind

  • Spatial tile-laying combined with deck-building adds notable rules overhead.
  • May appeal more to video-game fans than traditional Euro gamers.
  • Board scrolling setup can add fiddliness during play.
