About the game

Three Kingdoms Redux recreates the historical fracturing of Han-dynasty China as three players lead Wei, Wu, or Shu through up to twelve rounds of bidding, development, and warfare. Generals are bid to claim action spaces that let players farm, train armies, produce weapons, trade resources, and curry favor with the Han emperor. The weaker Wu and Shu factions can ally against the dominant Wei, reflecting historical power imbalances. The player with the most victory points after the final round wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors see this as a rich, historically grounded three-player game that captures the shifting power dynamics of its era well. The bidding system for actions creates constant tension over what to prioritize each round. It demands real commitment given its length and rules density. A strong pick for a dedicated three-player group interested in Chinese history.

What we like

  • Rich asymmetric factions grounded in historical Three Kingdoms lore.
  • Deep bidding and negotiation systems drive player interaction.
  • Catch-the-leader mechanisms help balance the game.
  • Strong long-term strategic depth across twelve rounds.

Keep in mind

  • Fixed strictly to a three-player count.
  • Long playtime with heavy rules overhead.
  • Niche historical theme may not appeal to broader audiences.

Who it's for

Best for exactly three experienced strategy gamers interested in Chinese history and long, rules-dense sessions.
