About the game

Ascension: Darkness Unleashed is both a standalone two-player deckbuilder and an expansion compatible with Ascension: Rise of Vigil and other Ascension games. It introduces Dark Energy Shards, a new take on Energy Shard treasure cards, along with a Fate effect that lets players banish discarded cards. New Energize cards let Heroes, Constructs, and Monsters transform into more powerful versions when energy thresholds are met. It's a fast-paced 30-minute deckbuilding duel for two players.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team enjoys how Darkness Unleashed adds meaningful new wrinkles to the Ascension formula without overcomplicating it. The transform mechanic gives satisfying power spikes to careful energy management. A solid pick for existing Ascension fans wanting a focused two-player experience.

  • Transform cards add exciting power spikes during play.
  • Works as a standalone game or an expansion to existing Ascension sets.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime suits a focused session.

Keep in mind

  • Limited to two players, so it can't serve larger groups.
