About the game

In The Builders: Middle Ages, cards represent either buildings under construction or the workers needed to build them, each rated across four skills: carpentry, masonry, architecture, and tilery. On your turn you can open new construction sites, recruit workers, or assign workers to buildings, paying their wages to cover a building's requirements and earn points and coins once it's complete. Completed buildings can even join your labor pool, letting you use them to help finish future projects. The game ends once a player hits 17 points, at which point everyone tallies their earned points and remaining coins to determine the winner. It's a tight 30-minute puzzle of matching the right workers to the right sites.

Hobbli's Notes

This is a lean, satisfying card game that packs a real resource-matching puzzle into a short playtime. It's an easy recommendation as a gateway title for players moving beyond pure luck games into light Euro-style decision-making. The theme is fairly abstract despite the medieval trapping, but the core loop of recruiting workers and racing to complete buildings stays engaging throughout.

What we like

  • Quick, easy-to-learn rules for a Euro-style game.
  • Satisfying puzzle of matching workers to buildings.
  • Fast 30-minute playtime keeps sessions brisk.
  • Good gateway title for newer strategy gamers.
  • Low downtime between turns.

Keep in mind

  • Limited long-term replay depth once strategies are learned.
  • Some luck in which cards appear in the market.
  • Can feel solitaire-ish with little direct player interaction.

Who it's for

Great for families and newer Euro gamers aged 10 and up looking for a quick, approachable worker-matching puzzle.
