About the game
San Juan condenses the beloved city-building economics of Puerto Rico into a fast-playing card game. Players build production and special-power buildings using a hand of multi-use cards, where any card can serve as currency to construct something else. Each round, a player selects a role that triggers an action for everyone, earning a privilege for the chooser, a clever mechanic that rewards planning and anticipation. The game ends once a player has built twelve structures, and profits or points determine the winner.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team loves San Juan as a superb standalone alternative to Puerto Rico for groups wanting the same satisfying role-selection engine-building in a fraction of the time. It's aged remarkably well as a classic of efficient card-driven design.
What we like
- Streamlined, fast-playing take on Puerto Rico's engine building.
- Clever role-selection mechanic rewards anticipation.
- Compact card-only components, easy to bring along.
- Highly replayable due to varied building combinations.
Keep in mind
- Less thematic depth than the original Puerto Rico.
- Card luck can affect available buildings.
- Some players may find role-selection repetitive.
Who it's for
Great for 2-4 players aged 10+ who enjoy engine-building card games and are fans of classic euro design like Puerto Rico.
