About the game

Impulse is a quick-playing 4X game set in space, where the board itself is built from action cards that players activate through a shared 'Impulse' queue. On a turn, players add a card from their hand to the Impulse, optionally use a tech action, resolve every action currently in the Impulse, then draw new cards. Transports activate sectors and carry valuable minerals, while cruisers patrol space and destroy enemy transports, with colored resources boosting the strength of your actions. Points come from destroying enemy ships, controlling map edges, and other card-driven achievements, with the first player to 20 points winning.

Hobbli's Notes

Designer Carl Chudyk (of Glory to Rome fame) packs an entire 4X space game into a fast, card-driven system: the shared Impulse queue is a genuinely inventive twist that forces you to think about what you're leaving for your opponents. It's dense and a little abstract for the space theme, but the strategic payoff is real.

What we like

  • Inventive shared Impulse action queue creates constant tension.
  • Deep 4X space strategy packed into a compact card format.
  • High replayability from the modular card layout.
  • Rewards careful reading of opponents' intentions.

Keep in mind

  • Steep learning curve typical of Carl Chudyk's dense design style.
  • Shared queue can invite analysis paralysis.
  • Player elimination is possible in longer games.
  • Abstract card-based presentation for a space 4X theme.

Who it's for

Best for experienced strategy gamers aged 13 and up who enjoy dense card-driven 4X games in groups of two to six.
