About the game

Lewis & Clark: The Expedition sends one to five players racing across the American frontier to be first to reach the Pacific, managing a growing crew of Native Americans and trappers along the way. The game's signature dual-use cards must be paired to activate, forcing players to constantly weigh playing a card now against saving it for a bigger combination later. Careful resource management and hand-building are key, as expanding your crew gives more options but slows your engine. A solo mode is also included for playing the expedition alone.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli rates this among the smartest historical euros for its dual-use card tension - every card played is also a card sacrificed, which creates constant meaningful decisions. The historical theme is well woven into the mechanics, though the moderate-heavy complexity and downtime call for a patient group.

What we like

  • Innovative dual-use card mechanism creates meaningful tension.
  • Strong integration of historical theme and mechanics.
  • Includes a solo mode.
  • High replayability from varied crew recruitment.

Keep in mind

  • Moderate-heavy complexity for newer players.
  • Notable downtime at higher player counts.
  • Card and resource availability introduce some luck.
