About the game

Roll for the Galaxy is a dice-based reimagining of Race for the Galaxy, in which players build space empires using dice that represent their populace. Each round, players secretly assign dice to develop new technologies, settle planets, produce goods, and ship them for profit, then simultaneously reveal their choices to see whose plans succeeded. A blind-bidding-style phase-selection mechanism keeps all players engaged at once, minimizing downtime despite the game's depth. Managing your growing tableau of settled and developed worlds efficiently is the key to building the most prosperous empire.

Hobbli's Notes

Roll for the Galaxy takes everything strategic about Race for the Galaxy's engine-building and translates it into a tactile, simultaneous dice-based system that plays much faster at the table. The action-selection mechanic is clever and keeps every player engaged even outside their own turn, which is a real strength for a game this deep. It does ask new players to get comfortable with some opaque iconography before the strategy clicks, so a first game benefits from a patient teacher.

What we like

  • The dice-as-workers system streamlines a beloved deep strategic engine.
  • Simultaneous play keeps downtime low despite the game's depth.
  • High replayability comes from the wide variety of tile combinations.
  • Building an efficient production-and-shipping engine is deeply satisfying.

Keep in mind

  • The underlying system can feel opaque to players unfamiliar with Race for the Galaxy.
  • Icon-heavy tiles create a real learning curve for newcomers.
  • Dice rolls affect which actions are available each round.
  • Quiet simultaneous play can reduce table talk compared to more social games.
