About the game
Ohne Furcht und Adel is the special German edition of the classic character-drafting card game Citadels, in which players secretly choose one of eight unique roles each round to gather gold and construct buildings across their city. Every character, from the scheming Assassin to the wealthy Merchant, offers a different path to power, and reading your opponents' likely choices is half the fun. This special edition adds fifteen new action cards that spice up the classic formula with new one-time effects. The game ends the moment a player completes their eighth building, triggering final scoring based on building value and bonuses. It's a tense, clever game of bluffing and deduction wrapped in a light medieval fantasy theme.
Hobbli's Notes
Citadels remains one of the sharpest role-selection games ever designed, and this special edition's bonus action cards add just enough spice to keep veteran players guessing. We love how the character powers create constant psychological tension: you're always trying to guess who picked the Assassin. It shines best with five or more players, when the guessing game about hidden roles gets genuinely tricky. A must-have gateway strategy title for any collection.
What we like
- Character powers create constant psychological bluffing and deduction.
- Bonus action cards in this edition add fresh tactical options.
- Quick to teach despite meaningful strategic depth.
- High replayability thanks to variable roles each round.
- Works well for a wide range of ages and group sizes.
Keep in mind
- Downtime can build up when players overthink their role choice.
- Targeted abilities like the Assassin can feel punishing to the victim.
- Card draw luck for buildings can offset strategic planning.
Who it's for
Great for ages 10 and up who enjoy light strategy, bluffing, and social deduction, ideally in groups of four to seven.
