About the game

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation is a Stratego-like duel where one player commands the Fellowship's light forces and the other leads Sauron's dark armies across Middle-earth. Each of the nine characters per side starts hidden from the opponent, and a hand of unique combat cards resolves clashes as pieces move across the board. The Fellowship player wins by sneaking Frodo into Mordor, while the Evil player wins by killing Frodo or overrunning the Shire. It's a tight, asymmetric bluffing game that packs deep tension into a thirty-minute session.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team considers this one of Reiner Knizia's sharpest two-player designs, distilling a huge fantasy epic into a taut game of hidden identity and calculated risk. The asymmetric win conditions keep both sides' decisions meaningfully different from each other. Its short playtime makes it easy to fit in multiple rematches in one sitting. The catch is that it lives or dies on having exactly one willing opponent across the table.

What we like

  • Asymmetric victory conditions keep both sides' strategies distinct.
  • Hidden character identities create real bluffing and deduction tension.
  • Quick thirty-minute playtime invites immediate rematches.
  • Strong Lord of the Rings theming throughout characters and art.

Keep in mind

  • Only supports exactly two players.
  • Memorizing character powers takes a few plays to master.
  • Limited long-term variety without additional expansions.

Who it's for

Ideal for two players (12+) who enjoy tense bluffing and deduction duels with strong fantasy theming.
