About the game

Pirate's Cove sends players sailing as rival pirate captains competing over twelve turns to become the most feared buccaneer on the high seas. Each turn, players secretly choose which of six islands to visit, and if rivals collide at the same island, dice-fueled ship combat determines who claims the bounty. Fame, gold, and treasure are earned through raiding islands, defeating legendary pirates like Blackbeard, and bragging with Tavern cards, while earnings can be spent upgrading your ship's sails, hull, crew, and cannons. Whoever accumulates the most fame by game's end is declared the greatest pirate of them all.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editorial team has always loved Pirate's Cove for its perfect blend of family-friendly theme and clever simultaneous-selection tension. Guessing where opponents will sail and whether to risk a fight or flee to safety creates constant excitement without heavy rules overhead. The legendary pirate encounters and ship upgrades give the game a satisfying sense of progression across its twelve turns. It remains one of our top recommendations for a pirate-themed family game night.

What we like

  • Simultaneous island selection creates tense bluffing every turn.
  • Ship upgrade system gives a satisfying sense of progression.
  • Legendary pirate encounters add exciting random events.
  • Accessible rules make it easy to teach to families.

Keep in mind

  • Combat outcomes rely heavily on dice luck.
  • Some islands are clearly better than others, which can feel imbalanced.
  • Twelve-turn structure can feel long for younger players.

Who it's for

Great for families and casual groups aged 8+ who enjoy pirate-themed adventure and light combat in groups of 3-5.
