About the game
Jamaica is a pirate-themed tactical race game where players navigate their ships around the island, balancing their position in the race with side goals like collecting treasure and battling rivals. Each round, the acting captain rolls two dice to set the day and night values, and all players simultaneously choose cards from their hand to move their ship and load goods into their cargo holds. Landing on an occupied space triggers combat, resolved with dice and optional gunpowder tokens. Designed by Bruno Cathala and others, it's a lighthearted game of racing, resource management, and light conflict for 2-6 players.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli's team enjoys Jamaica's clever simultaneous card-selection mechanic, which forces players to constantly weigh moving forward in the race against detouring for treasure and gold. The pirate theme is charmingly realized through combat and treasure-hunting side quests. It plays quickly and scales well up to six players, making it a great fit for family game nights. The balance between racing and side-goal optimization gives it more depth than a typical race game.
What we like
- Simultaneous card play keeps every player engaged each round.
- Multiple paths to victory through racing, treasure, and combat.
- Charming pirate theme with strong table interaction.
- Scales well for groups of up to six players.
Keep in mind
- Luck of the dice rolls can significantly affect outcomes.
- Card hand management can create some analysis paralysis.
- Combat resolution may feel swingy for players who prefer pure racing.
Who it's for
Great for families and casual groups aged 8+ who enjoy pirate themes, light tactical racing, and simultaneous card play, in groups of 2-6.
