About the game

Power Grid: The First Sparks reimagines the classic Power Grid economic engine in the Stone Age, casting players as clan leaders developing hunting technologies and spreading their people across new territories. Using the familiar Power Grid structure of turn order tied to progress, players draft technology cards, expand their clan's reach, and compete for the best hunting grounds. Empty spaces are cheaper to settle than contested ones, adding tension to expansion decisions. The first clan to grow to 13 members wins this faster, more direct take on the Power Grid formula.

Hobbli's Notes

Fans of the original Power Grid will recognize the elegant player-order-punishes-the-leader structure here, transplanted cleverly into a prehistoric setting. It plays noticeably faster and more directly than the original, making it a great entry point for newcomers who found Power Grid intimidating. The tension between spreading out cheaply versus fighting for prime hunting grounds keeps every decision meaningful.

What we like

  • Familiar Power Grid mechanics reworked into an approachable Stone Age theme.
  • Faster and more direct than the original Power Grid.
  • Turn-order system keeps the game balanced and competitive.
  • Scales well across a wide range of player counts (2-6).

Keep in mind

  • Players unfamiliar with Power Grid may need onboarding for the auction-adjacent order system.
  • Thematic reskin may feel less distinctive to those who already own the original.

Who it's for

Great for economic and network-building euro-game fans, ages 12 and up, in groups of 2-6 who enjoy Power Grid-style mechanics.
