About the game

Snowdonia sends 1-5 players to 1894 Wales to build the Snowdon Mountain Railway up a treacherous, mist-covered peak. As worker-placement 'work gangs,' players excavate track beds, lay rails, raise viaducts, and build stations, all while fighting against a randomized weather deck that can help or hinder progress each round. Special work contracts grant bonuses for efficient play, and a train token offers assistance, though not always when you want it. Every game plays out differently thanks to the ever-changing mountain weather.

Hobbli's Notes

Snowdonia's weather-event deck is a genuinely clever twist on worker placement, injecting fresh challenges into every session without feeling gimmicky. Tony Boydell's design rewards adaptable planning over rigid strategies, since the mountain rarely cooperates. The solo mode holds up well too, making this a satisfying pick even without a full table.

What we like

  • Randomized weather deck keeps every playthrough distinct.
  • Satisfying worker-placement resource management.
  • Strong, well-regarded solo variant.
  • Thematic railway-building narrative reinforced by mechanics.

Keep in mind

  • Downtime can build at higher player counts.
  • Weather-driven randomness can disrupt carefully laid plans.
  • Iconography and rules take some time to fully internalize.

Who it's for

Great for euro-gamers aged 10+ who enjoy worker placement with a dynamic, ever-changing twist; 1-5 players including strong solo play.
