About the game
Helvetia puts players in charge of small mountain villages in the Swiss Alps, balancing work, construction, and trade with the everyday drama of village life. Using action points, tile placement, and worker placement, players build new homes, bring culture to their village, and sell goods at market. A charming marriage mechanic lets you marry off villagers into rival villages for income, growing your population as new citizens join from these unions. Balancing growth, culture, and trade determines whose village thrives the most.
Hobbli's Notes
Designer Matthias Cramer folds a genuinely quirky social mechanic, marrying off villagers between rival players, into an otherwise solid worker placement and tile-laying euro. It's a lighter, friendlier take on village-building than some of Cramer's heavier designs, with charm that comes through in both the theme and the artwork. The interlocking systems of homes, culture, and market goods give it decent depth, though it doesn't stand out dramatically from other worker placement village-builders.
What we like
- Charming marriage mechanic adds a distinctive social twist to worker placement.
- Multiple paths to growth through homes, culture, and trade.
- Lighter and friendlier tone than many heavier euro village-builders.
- Attractive artwork brings the Swiss Alps setting to life.
- 90-minute playtime keeps sessions from dragging.
Keep in mind
- Doesn't dramatically distinguish itself mechanically from similar worker-placement euros.
- High downtime score suggests turns between players can take a while.
- May feel derivative to players who already own similar village-building games.
Who it's for
Euro-game fans aged 12 and up who enjoy worker placement and village-building games, for 2-4 players.
