About the game
Thunderstone: Dragonspire is a standalone fantasy deck-building game where 1-5 players recruit heroes and gear from the Village to raid an ever-shifting Dungeon deck of monsters. Rather than buying pure victory points, you spend your deck's strength to defeat monsters, which then become valuable cards in your own deck. Light management, weapon and spell synergies, and hero leveling let players tailor a strategy each game. It plays well solo or with a full table of five.
Hobbli's Notes
Hobbli rates Dragonspire as one of the stronger standalone entries in the Thunderstone line, refreshing the art and adding Setting cards that shake up each session. The dungeon-crawl framing gives deck-building extra thematic punch compared to more abstract genre entries. It rewards careful hero and gear synergy planning, appealing to deck-builder fans looking for more theme. The genre itself is crowded these days, so it may feel familiar to veterans of the category.
What we like
- Deep deck-building combined with an engaging dungeon-crawl theme.
- Fully standalone game with a large pool of heroes and monsters.
- Scales cleanly from solo play up to five players.
- Low downtime for its complexity (downtime grade B).
Keep in mind
- Can invite analysis paralysis when optimizing purchases.
- Deck-building genre is now crowded with more streamlined alternatives.
- Card pool set-up can take longer than lighter games.
Who it's for
Ideal for deck-building and fantasy dungeon-crawl fans aged 12+, playing solo or in groups up to 5.
