About the game

Kariba is a quick, clever card game by Reiner Knizia set at a savanna watering hole. Players lay down matching sets of animal cards, and if three or more of the same animal gather, they scare away weaker animals waiting to drink, letting the player scoop up those cards for points. With a simple rock-paper-scissors-like chain of who scares whom, it's an easy-to-teach filler with just enough tension to stay engaging.

Hobbli's Notes

A tidy little Knizia design: simple to teach in two minutes, but with real decisions about when to strike and when to hold back. Great as a warm-up game or with younger players.

What we like

  • Extremely quick to teach and play, ideal as a filler.
  • Simple chain-scaring mechanic offers surprising tactical depth.
  • Charming animal theme appeals strongly to younger players.
  • Short 15-minute playtime works well between longer games.

Keep in mind

  • Very light strategy may not satisfy experienced gamers long-term.
  • Luck of the draw can outweigh careful planning at times.
  • Limited variety across repeated plays.

Who it's for
