About the game

Vampire: The Eternal Struggle casts 2 to 5 players as ancient vampire Methuselahs manipulating younger vampire minions in a shadowy political struggle for supremacy. Rather than a free-for-all, each player directs attacks at the player to their left while defending against the player to their right, creating shifting alliances and rivalries around the table. Players spend a pool of influence to recruit vampires and manage the blood those minions need to activate their unique powers, all while trying to oust their prey to gain victory points. Designed by Richard Garfield, VTES replaces resource cards with an instant-replacement hand and no mana system, keeping the focus on politics and card play rather than land draws. Games typically run around two hours and support a dedicated tournament scene through the Vampire: Elder Kindred Network.

Hobbli's Notes

VTES remains one of the most socially rich multiplayer card games ever designed, thanks to its unique prey/predator seating structure that forces real diplomacy at the table. We appreciate that Garfield stripped out resource cards entirely, letting the game move faster and focus purely on tactical and political decisions. The pool-and-blood economy creates genuine tension between growing your board and risking elimination. It's a deep, long-lived game best enjoyed by a group willing to learn its many card interactions.

What we like

  • Unique prey/predator seating creates deep multiplayer political dynamics.
  • No mana or land cards to draw, keeping every turn focused on tactical play.
  • Long-running organized tournament support through the Vampire: Elder Kindred Network.
  • Rich Vampire: The Masquerade storytelling woven directly into gameplay.

Keep in mind

  • Requires significant investment in cards to build competitive decks.
  • Complex rules and card text can be intimidating for newcomers.
  • Full five-player games can stretch well past two hours.

Who it's for

Best for card game enthusiasts aged 13+ who enjoy political multiplayer strategy, ideally in groups of 4-5 for full table dynamics.
