About the game

Legend of the Five Rings is a classic collectible card game set in Rokugan, a fantasy empire inspired by medieval Japan. Players build decks around one of several Great Clans, including Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, and Unicorn, each with distinct thematic strategies. Drafting, set collection, and player elimination mechanics drive competitive clan-versus-clan duels. Its storyline tournaments and clan loyalty system made it one of the most community-driven CCGs of its era.

Hobbli's Notes

Hobbli's editors regard L5R as a landmark CCG, notable for its deep clan identity and player-influenced storyline: a rarity among collectible card games of the 90s. While the collectible format means ongoing cost and deckbuilding investment, the strategic clan match-ups and rich Rokugan setting still hold up for players who enjoy competitive card dueling. Newer players may prefer the Fantasy Flight LCG relaunch for a more accessible entry point.
