About the game

Settlers of America: Trails to Rails takes the familiar Catan hex-grid formula and reshapes it into a westward-expansion tale of 19th-century America. Players collect and trade resources to found settlements, forge railroads, and acquire locomotives, distributing goods across their growing rail network. As resources deplete near settled areas, players must push further west, with gold adding extra strategic depth. It's a heavier, more thematic entry in the Catan Histories line for 3-4 players who enjoy trading and network-building.

Hobbli's Notes

This is Catan for players who've outgrown the base game and want more meat on the bones. We especially like the historical westward-expansion framing and the added railroad layer. A great next step for Catan fans ready for a longer, richer session.

What we like

  • Familiar Catan hex-grid mechanics make it easy to pick up for existing fans.
  • Adds meaningful new depth through railroads, locomotives, and depleting resources.
  • Historical westward-expansion theme adds narrative flavor to trading and building.
  • Gold mechanic adds strategic variety not found in base Catan.

Keep in mind

  • 120-minute playtime is notably longer than standard Catan.
  • Requires exactly 3-4 players, limiting flexibility.
  • Added rules complexity may overwhelm players only familiar with base Catan.

Who it's for

Best for existing Catan fans and 3-4 player groups who want a meatier, more historical take on the classic trading and route-building formula.
