About the game

In Catan, players build settlements, cities, and roads across the island of Catan, collecting resources based on dice rolls each turn. Five resource types, wood, brick, sheep, wheat, and ore, are produced by hexagonal terrain tiles arranged differently every game. Players trade resources with each other and at ports to gather what they need for new construction, while a robber can block production and steal cards when a seven is rolled. The first player to reach ten victory points, from settlements, cities, roads, and development cards, wins.

Hobbli's Notes

Catan is the quintessential gateway game that introduced millions of people to modern hobby board gaming, and it still holds up thanks to its variable modular board and constant trading and negotiation. Every game plays out differently based on the terrain layout and dice results, keeping repeat plays interesting. Its reliance on dice for resource production and the sometimes harsh robber mechanic can create early lucky or unlucky starts that frustrate newer players.

What we like

  • Iconic, easy-to-learn gateway design accessible to almost anyone.
  • Variable modular board keeps every game feeling different.
  • Strong trading and negotiation create dynamic player interaction.
  • Extensive expansion support adds long-term variety.

Keep in mind

  • Dice-based resource production can create early luck imbalances.
  • Robber and blocking mechanics can feel harsh to newer players.
  • Can suffer from a runaway leader if one player controls key resources.
