About the game

Axis & Allies: Europe 1940 is a deluxe World War II wargame covering the European theater, complete with neutral countries that can be drawn into the conflict. Players command national forces - including new mechanized infantry and tactical bombers - across a large 35-by-32-inch map, managing economies and armies simultaneously. France and Italy get their own dedicated units and national tokens, adding asymmetry to the classic Axis & Allies system. It can be combined with Axis & Allies: Pacific 1940 to create a sprawling six-player global game. Sessions typically run around 6 hours for 2 to 6 players.

Hobbli's Notes

Europe 1940 is a landmark entry in the Axis & Allies series, offering an epic scale that rewards dedicated wargamers willing to set aside a full afternoon or evening. The added neutral countries and national units for France and Italy give the classic formula meaningfully more strategic texture. This is a serious time and table-space commitment, so it's best planned as an event rather than a casual pickup game. A must-own for fans of grand-scale historical wargaming.

What we like

  • Expansive WWII European theater with neutral countries to invade.
  • Deep strategic army and economic management systems.
  • Combinable with Axis & Allies: Pacific 1940 for a massive six-player game.

Keep in mind

  • Very long 360-minute playtime demands a full session or day.
  • High complexity and heavy downtime between turns.
  • Large board and component footprint require significant table space.
