About the game

Pente is a classic abstract strategy game played on a 19-by-19 grid, the same board used for Go. Players alternate placing glass markers at intersections, aiming to line up five markers in a row or capture five pairs of an opponent's pieces by sandwiching them between two of their own. The first player to achieve either condition wins. Simple to learn but rich in tactical depth, Pente has spawned several variants and remains a beloved two-to-four-player abstract game since its release in 1977.

Hobbli's Notes

Pente is a wonderfully elegant abstract game: the capture rule adds a layer of tactical bite that pure connection games like Go-Moku lack, forcing players to defend against captures even while building toward five in a row. It's an easy game to teach but a genuinely tricky one to master.

What we like

  • Simple rules make it easy to teach and learn quickly.
  • Capture mechanic adds tactical depth beyond simple connection games.
  • Quick 30-minute playtime is great for repeat matches.
  • Decades of popularity prove its lasting strategic appeal.

Keep in mind

  • Purely abstract theme won't appeal to players seeking narrative or luck.
  • Can feel repetitive for players seeking variable strategy games.
  • Best experienced at the two-player count despite four-player support.

Who it's for

Great for two to four players ages 8+ who enjoy abstract strategy games in the tradition of Go and Go-Moku.
