About the game

American Rails casts players as wealthy capitalists managing portfolios of stocks and bonds across six fictional railroad companies in the eastern United States. Through negotiation, auction/bidding, and careful investment, you jockey to increase the value of your holdings while navigating variable turn order and shifting network conditions. Inspired by Chicago Express and the Historic Railroads System, the game emphasizes cutthroat stock manipulation over track-laying, rewarding sharp negotiation and timing. With no luck involved, the player with the most money at the end becomes the nation's first railroad baron. Designed by Tim Harrison, it's a mid-weight economic game for 3-5 players.

Hobbli's Notes

American Rails is a lean, luckless stock-and-negotiation game for fans of 18xx-adjacent railroad economics: it distills the tension of that genre into a tighter 90-minute package. The variable turn order and 'city dilution' mechanics keep even repeat plays feeling different, which is a real strength for a game this focused on negotiation.

What we like

  • Luckless design rewards pure negotiation and strategic skill.
  • Variable turn order and set-up boost long-term replayability.
  • Distills 18xx-style stock mechanics into a shorter, focused game.
  • Rewards sharp timing and reading of opponents' intentions.

Keep in mind

  • Heavy negotiation focus may not suit players who dislike direct confrontation.
  • Stock-market theme and mechanics can be dry for casual players.
  • Requires at least three players to fully function.
