About the game

Merkator is set during Hamburg's economic rise after the Thirty Years' War, tasking players with visiting cities to gather goods and fulfill trade orders. Completing an order rewards you with a more valuable but more complex follow-up order, which you keep and can complete again, though the number of orders you can hold is limited. Entering cities costs or grants a resource called 'time,' which you can also spend to tag along with rivals' trips to fulfill your own orders in their destination city. Designed by Uwe Rosenberg, the game supports 1 to 4 players in roughly 90 minutes and ends once a player claims the highest-value order available. Special cards let you trade points for extra goods or bonus scoring conditions at game's end.

Hobbli's Notes

Merkator shows a quieter, more understated side of Uwe Rosenberg's design work, built around a satisfying escalating order chain rather than big engine-building. We appreciate the tension in the 'time' resource, since every city visit is a careful trade-off between progress and cost. It rewards efficient route planning more than flashy combos. It's a solid pick for fans of Rosenberg's economic games looking for something a bit more understated than Agricola or Le Havre.

What we like

  • A satisfying escalating order chain rewards careful long-term planning.
  • Designed by acclaimed Euro designer Uwe Rosenberg.
  • The 'time' resource creates meaningful trade-offs between cost and efficiency.
  • Supports solo play for practicing trade routes alone.

Keep in mind

  • Can feel dry and abstract for players wanting a stronger theme.
  • Escalating order complexity may overwhelm newcomers as the game progresses.
  • Long out of print, making copies harder to find.
  • Offers relatively limited direct player interaction.

Who it's for
